Alloa Tower at a glance

Alloa Tower is a medieval tower house built by the Erskine family. The National Trust for Scotland, which runs it, dates the tower to the 14th century. In the 18th century John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar, had the interiors remodelled. The Erskine family history also connects the tower to the Jacobite rising of 1715.

The tower stands in the town centre, so it works as a short stop between trains or as the start of a day around Clackmannanshire. Individual visitors can turn up without booking. The tower opens on four days a week from spring to the end of October and then shuts for the winter.

Because the tower is only open four afternoons a week, build it into a Friday to Monday plan. If you are in the area on a Tuesday to Thursday, Castle Campbell or Stirling Castle tickets are better choices. For the days Alloa Tower is shut, a Scotland day tour from Glasgow or Edinburgh also covers the Stirling area.

The ground floor is accessible by wheelchair. Above it there are stairs, so plan for that if anyone in your group finds steps hard. Assistance dogs are allowed in the building. National Trust for Scotland members park for free, and accessible parking at the entrance is arranged in advance with the staff.
