The 246 steps: what to expect

The climb is the whole point, so it helps to know what it asks of you.

A narrow spiral

The stair is a tight spiral of 246 steps from bottom to top. The count is for the whole climb, not per floor.

No handrail

The historic spiral stair has no handrail. Wear shoes with grip, and keep a free hand for the wall.

Bags and carriers

Large rucksacks, suitcases and baby carriers worn on the back are not allowed on the stairs. There is no luggage storage, so leave big bags where you are staying.

Who should skip the top

The stair is the only route to the galleries and the Crown. If steep spiral stairs are a problem for you, enjoy the monument from below and the walk up through the woods.

Views from the Wallace Monument

The tower stands on its own hill, with the Ochil Hills rising behind it in warm evening light and the Forth winding across the farmland below. What you see from the galleries depends on the day. Low cloud can hide the Ochils, and a clear morning gives the longest view.

For another high viewpoint, the walk up Dumyat on the Ochil Hills looks back across the Forth valley. See the Ochil Hills page for the route.

Getting to the Wallace Monument from Alloa

Train to Stirling first, then the hill.

Train to Stirling

Direct ScotRail trains run from Alloa to Stirling, averaging 8 minutes, with return fares from £4.70. See getting there for the bus and the details. Check the timetable and plan the last stretch from Stirling to the monument car park separately.

Parking

The visitor car park at the foot of the hill is free.

Shuttle or walk

From the car park it is a walk of 15 to 20 minutes to the tower. A free shuttle takes about 5 minutes, but capacity is limited and the shuttle can stop. It pauses from 13:00 to 13:30. Plan for the walk in case the shuttle is not running.

For a full day, pair the monument with Stirling Castle, and see the other Stirling sights.
