Alloa weather in short
Alloa sits on the flat land beside the Forth, with the Ochil Hills rising just to the north. Summers are mild, winters are cool but not severe, and rain falls in every month. There is no dry season, so plan for a shower whenever you come. The best time to visit Alloa depends less on the thermometer than on which sights are open.
The figures below are Met Office climate averages for 1991 to 2020 from the Edinburgh Gogarbank station. It is a comparison station in the wider area, not a measuring point in Alloa itself, and it says nothing about the hill tops. Highs and lows are monthly averages of the daily highest and lowest temperature, not records. They describe a typical month, not the weather on your day.

Best time to visit Alloa
Three simple ways to choose.
For the most open sights
Choose April to September. Castle Campbell is open daily from 1 April to 30 September, 10:00 to 16:30, with a break from 12:30 to 13:30. Alloa Tower runs from 3 April to 31 October in 2026. If you want to go inside Stirling Castle as well, see the guide to Stirling Castle tickets.
For the warmest days
July and August have the highest averages, with highs near 19 °C and lows around 11 °C. Evenings still cool down, so pack a layer even in summer.
For the quietest off-season trip
Winter brings cool days and rain, and two of the main interiors are shut. Stirling Castle stays open, and the glen and the town keep their free walks. Dress for wet ground and short days.
Our pick: a whisky tasting for a wet day
Rain falls in every month here, so it helps to keep one plan that happens at a distillery near Stirling Castle, whatever the sky does.

Weather and your walks
What the numbers do not tell you.
Hills and glen
The table covers lowland air, not the summits. Before you climb Dumyat or Ben Cleuch, check a hill forecast and dress for more wind and cloud than in town. The walks are described on the page about the Ochil Hills.
Dollar Glen in wet weather
The paths are steep and uneven, and they run through woodland. After rain they are slippery. Wear boots with a good grip and read the route notes on the Castle Campbell and Dollar Glen page.
Layers, not a fixed outfit
With highs between 7 °C and 19 °C across the year and rain in every month, a waterproof jacket and a warm middle layer cover most days.
A rainy day plan
Alloa Tower and Stirling Castle both have indoor rooms. See the Alloa Tower page for the season, days and prices.

Getting there
